Radiation Safety Update
It might feel a little lighter when you get your next dental x-rays taken. In February of 2024 the American Dental Association (ADA) updated the recommendations for the use of lead abdominal aprons and thyroid collars. Research done by the American Dental Association states that reproductive organs are not affected by modern X-ray systems and the shields do not provide a benefit.
With the widespread use of digital dental imaging, the amount of radiation exposure has been significantly reduced, making shielding aprons unnecessary. Modern X-ray machines use about 96% less radiation than those from 1976 when the recommendation for lead aprons were first made.
We as a dental community now have much more precise technology to ensure our patients safety. Modern X-ray machines have built in sensors that determine the minimal amount of radiation needed to capture an image.
This does not mean Monroe Street Family Dental has tossed all of our lead aprons out the door. If you still have concerns, the lead aprons are still available and we will gladly provide one upon request when taking your x-rays.
