Probiotics for Dental Care

What are “probiotics?”

In 2002, the World Health Organization defined probiotics as “live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”.

Probiotics are live bacteria that are beneficial for our health, including our digestive system, and oral health. When consumed in adequate amounts, these microorganisms can provide a variety of health benefits. For example, they help maintain a balanced gut microbiota by promoting the growth of good bacteria and inhibiting harmful ones.

Probiotics can improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, and support a strong immune system. They are commonly found in certain foods like yogurt, kefir, as well as in dietary supplements.

Oral probiotics

You may have heard of probiotics, but did you know that the evidence is clear for their benefit to oral health? After decades of scientific study, the benefits are fact, not theory. The use of a live probiotic can:

- inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria
- reduce and prevent inflammation and gum disease
- improve outcomes after scaling and root planing
- reduce the incidence of tooth caries (decay)
- improve the benefit of regular preventative cleanings
- improve breath and reduce halitosis
- protect baby teeth and gums, and reduce colic
- help stabilize the GI tract, improve skin, and strengthen the immune system

We are excited to announce that we will begin to incorporate BioGaia ProDentis live probiotics into our recommendations and periodontal protocol here at Monroe Street Family Dental. ProDentis is available as unflavored drops or as a lozenge that are recommended for daily use. You can also purchase these products over the counter and from retailers such as Amazon.

We recommend that you use an oral probiotic as a part of a healthy and effective preventative care routine. Killing germs is important, but after doing so it is just as important to build back a healthy flora! At your next preventative visit ask us about a limited supply of samples and how we will recommend ProDentis in future here at the practice.
