Some of you have recently received a letter informing you of a change in our insurance relationship with Delta Dental for 2025. I understand you may be disappointed with this decision. I am too. We had hoped to continue working with Delta Dental but low reimbursement has made this untenable. I want to share a few more thoughts on the “why” of this decision.
Since our opening in 2009, we have proudly operated as a family-owned, neighborhood practice. We have always envisioned being different from the large group and corporate offices. Monroe Street Family Dental grew one patient at a time by spending valuable time with you, listening to your concerns and providing personalized care. High quality, comprehensive dentistry in a community-focused environment is our mission. We have an amazing team. We are always learning. This is who we are and who we want to be.
Our relationship with Delta Dental has become less supportive over time.
From the start we have been in-network with Delta Dental as a Premier Provider. In the first 5 years, Delta Dental supported our patients’ care by increasing reimbursement to maintain alignment with our fees. Over the last 10 years, Delta Dental has increased reimbursement only once. This has translated into larger and larger discounts.
As much as we want to continue to see all of our patients regardless of their insurance, at some point it becomes impossible to accept the growing discounts required by Delta Dental without sacrificing quality and time. Headwinds like high inflation, workforce shortages, and a pandemic have only made things more difficult. I won’t go on with my frustrations, since we are all dealing with our own challenges. But through it all, it has become clear that we can only stay true to our vision if we maintain our independence from insurance contracts.
We truly appreciate the relationships that we have developed with each and every one of you. While this change does not affect our ability to still see you, we do recognize that the increase in out-of-pocket costs may not work for you and your family. If you choose to seek your dental care elsewhere, we understand and respect your decision. And also know that if you go elsewhere, you are always welcome back!
I would certainly appreciate the opportunity to talk further about this with you personally. I will look forward to seeing you soon, whether at Monroe Street Family Dental or around the neighborhood.
With Gratitude,
Benjamin Farrow, DDS
