The Healthy Baby Exam

What is a healthy baby exam and why is it important?

We love to meet your little ones! We are committed to creating a positive relationship between he or she and the dentist to promote good dental health for a lifetime.

We encourage you to protect your child's teeth by starting dental checkups early. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry say that the first dental visit should occur within six months after the baby's first tooth appears, but no later than the child's first birthday. It's best to meet the dentist when your child is having no dental problems - don't wait until an emergency comes up!

Tooth decay can occur as soon as your child's first tooth erupts. Parents may wonder why they should worry about decay in baby teeth, since they will be replaced by permanent teeth. The problem is that decay in primary teeth could mean a higher risk of decay in the permanent teeth. And if decay is severe, it can harm the child's overall health.

Dr. Farrow will give a thorough exam to address any concerns you may have and share anything he may see. We will show you how to clean your child's teeth, discuss diet, and fluoride needs and recommend oral care products. He can answer your questions about your baby's teeth, just like a well-baby visit with your pediatrician. And to show you how much we care – the first visit for those under three is on us!

Once your child is three (or sooner if they are ready), he or she will get to visit with our hygienist and sit in the chair all by themselves!  It is a big step and one to be celebrated.  The hygienist will begin introducing the tools used for a cleaning with and proceed at the pace your child is most comfortable.   Generally, x-rays begin to be discussed and introduced between the age of 4 and 5, or as appropriate for their individual cavity risk.

We understand your child’s first visit is a big step!  Call us with any questions and we would be happy to provide detailed information.  We look forward to meeting the smallest among your family!
